Villas in Sicily – Italy
Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean, separated from the Italian peninsula by the strait of Messina.
Known for its mild climate in winter, the wonderful rugged coastal scenery, breathtaking views, abundance of
archaeological remains, its volcano, citrus fruits, wine and superb Mediterranean cooking, make Sicily
extremely popular with the Italians themselves for holidays. Within a few kilometres, the landscape can
dramatically change from barren hills to green grasslands, from snowy fields to white sandy beaches.
Influences of many civilisations that have occupied the island can be found in the wonderful towns and cities, within its monuments and works of art.
Palermo is the capital and makes a fascinating day trip from wherever you are on the island. A blend of the many rulers over the centuries can be experienced in and around this laid back city on the west coast.
Royal palaces, cathedrals and churches provide a wealth of art and history, complimented by its famous markets and the Botanical Garden - one of the most important of its kind in Europe.
Mount Etna, in the east, is the highest active volcano in Europe and due to its active nature of many years ago, the surrounding area has become fertile, rich in citrus plantations. In fact, many buildings in Catania, a city that sits at the foot of this volcano, have been built from lava stone.
Amongst the many popular seaside resorts are Cefalù (near Palermo), Mondello, Acitrezza, Acireale, Taormina and Tindari.
There are extensive sandy beaches on the southern coast and you will find mainly pebbled beaches to the north.
Sicilian cooking is unique, blending extravagant Arab and northern techniques with simple peasant ingredients, mainly the catch of the sea and the pick of the garden. Wherever you are on the island, you can be certain of gastronomic delights with strong flavours and mouth watering specialities.
